The Sun in Taurus – what does our Hierophant say?

posted in: Book, Card Description, Card Image, News | 0

After the fiery start into the astrological new year with Aries and the corresponding Emperor in our tarot cards, we are now under the influence of Taurus and the Hierophant in the tarot.
Taurus is about enjoying life in a sensual and earthy manner, building stability and being reliable. The Hierophant links this to the all-important activities of teaching and learning.

This is what I wrote about our Starlight Dragon card in “Travelling with Starlight Dragons”:

As we enter the temple, the Hierophant, a tall elephantine dragon, is seated under a stained glass window of a white rose. He is holding an enormous key. The pearl of wisdom shines from his third eye.

Welcome to the temple of teaching and learning, welcome to me, its warden, the dragon says in a voice, reverberating like a deep gong within us.

Here is the manifest home of the knowledge and wisdom dragons have imparted to human beings from time immemorial. You have met already the Magician and the High Priestess. Together we are your wise dragon-teachers appearing in the first third of your Fool‘s – journey, while you grow up and learn. Each of us is teaching you in a different way, as you very well recognised already with the Magician and the Priestess.

I am the transmitter and translator of hidden knowledge into openly available teachings. I am the keeper of the traditions and their inner sense. I open the doors to those willing and ready to put themselves to learning, and I guide them along to the treasures, which I guard under my key.
I am the one teaching and counselling Emperors and other seekers alike in all kinds of practical applications of high teachings. I also hold the invisible key to greater mysteries – the path of the rose and the thorn. This path has to be walked with a pure heart and pure intent – hence the rose is white.

Apart from the Five, the number of spiritual endeavour beyond the four earthly elements, you see the Two and the Three making it up. The Two, the number of polarity is expressed in the colours red and blue in the stained glass window. and in the small red rose mirroring the white one, on the bottom of my treasure chest – the rose of love, of passionate dedication to knowledge. The Three is also in the win- dow as well in the bit of the key. This refers to the tripartite world in the oldest cosmologies of the world and the many triplicities in belief systems and symbols. Outside, three steps are visible from each of the two sets of stairs up to the temple, guarded by two dragons.

He comes closer to us.

You see, my dragon form visible to you has features of an elephant. The elephant has esoteric similarities with the bull – and Taurus is my sign: the wisdom and responsibility for the herd, those who are ent- rusted to me. I have a very long memory. I also share properties with the Hindu elephant god Ganesha – a deity of learning and wisdom as well as success.

There is an even deeper lesson in this connection – the one of sacrifice, which we touched upon, when I pointed you to the red rose. One of the legends about Ganesha shows us the importance of being devo- ted to knowledge and learning up to the point, where we are ready and willing to sacrifice our comforts: As Brahma‘s scribe, Ganesha one day missed his pen, when Brahma began to dictate a part of the Mahabharata. To be able to write, Ganesha removed one of his tusks and used it as a pen. This is why he is often depicted with a broken tusk.

We look into his friendly encouraging eyes and feel drawn to him. We intuit his silent plea, that we be open and dedicated to his teaching. But do dragons really care so much? … And then our time today with the Hierophant is over. We know we have to come back here often.

The Hierophant

Recently we started focussing on the Hierophant and what he has to say to us. We chose him has a emblem for our TarotCon. This coincides not just with the ‘season’ of the zodiacal sign of Taurus, to which the Hierophant corresponds, but also with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for a thrilling new tarot-project – the Tarot Wayfarer (starting May 1st). On the “journey towards the journey’ up till now and on to May 1st, various hints have been dropped on “the Rose Key – Mystery” and our Hierophant card is part of it! See Dragons in the Starlight for intriguing hints.

Meanwhile, Nora and I revealed some of the mysteries encapsulated in our card in a video in or series Tarot Talks with the Starlight Dragons.

The 9-Dragon Wall with the Starlight Dragon to Align with the Festive Season

posted in: Practice, Spreads | 0
I woke today to the phrase “Always coming home”, title of a novel by Ursula Le Guin. I looked it up but could not find why it had come to me. But I thought about how we nearly always are coming or staying home at Christmas, a time of family gatherings, sometimes even of reconciliation.
My thoughts went on to what home (ideally) means: the place where we are known, where we find our close relations, where we feel comfortable and secure.
Wishing you all a warm, secure and festive end-of- the year days at wherever true home is for you, I share the  9-dragon wall with the Starlight Dragon. In Chinese imperial culture 9-dragon walls (which could include many more dragons) were used to close off palaces for privacy. But through the number
nine they were also linked with well-being, especially longevity. The 9-Dragon walls showed dragons in a row, I have developed a specific layout for the Starlight Dragon.

While shuffling the cards, we focus on what is home for us and how we wish to come home this year.
After shuffling he cards, we take out the bottom card and without looking at the picture, we put it aside, Then we take 8 cards from the top and play out 3 in the top row, 2 in the next, 1in the next, then we complete the one with 2 more cards below, then we take the original bottom card, turn it face up and complete the lower square. This card sums up the reading and we honour the imperial Chinese tradition, in which the emperor and other very highly placed persons wore garments with 9 dragons, at least on of which would remain hidden.

From the elemental rings and the colours of the cards we see at a glance that the top row and the left diagonal run from cold/cutting/difficult to harmonious/emotional/warm, even fiery in the case of the top row. We hope and expect to leave the bustle and struggle, the need permanently move forward behind (10 and Knight of Swords), to open up to our emotions, and feeling homely (Ace of Cups, Queen of Cups).Similarly, the top first cards:: to leave the 10Sw, the struggling and overthinking and let go into the balanced 4 of Cups, which even hints at the solemnity of the festive season. The third card even intimates the lively fire of a fireplace and the star form of Christmas cookies. The five here is not the challenge it usually is, but the break from the straining everyday routines, but also the inner space for the reassertion of what is truly important for us (5 Wands), this carries over in the Fool, which might incite in us the confidence for a new adventure to be undertaken in the New Year. The Ace of Cups, the centre card of the spread gives the nourishment of our intuition to these new ventures and mediates the flow into the the 7 Wands: we should stand up for ourselves with these new initiative and not allow ourselves to be distracted. Justice sums it up: this is a very good balance dragon wall, auspicious for our year end celebrations and to think about the coming year. The earth element is missing, though. Only in the (near?) future we will start to worry on how to make real that which we now experience as a new spark of inspiration springing from our rest and turning towards our intuition and deep-felt affection for those close to us.
